This theme explores human connections through friendship, social networking, memory, drama, and volunteering. It examines how people connect with each other and with themselves, and how we can make the world a better place by helping others.

2. Unit-by-Unit Summary / ملخص وحدة بوحدة

Unit 1: No Man Is An Island / لا أحد جزيرة بمفرده

This unit is based on the famous quote by English poet John Donne (1572-1631): ‘No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent.’ Students read a text about why we need friends – for affirmation of our personal value, security, stimulation, help when depressed, and sharing good news. The reading tip introduces the strategy of ‘Preparing to Read’.

Unit 2: Social Networking / التواصل الاجتماعي

Students read about social networking websites which had over 100 million users. These sites allow users to post profiles, blogs, photos, music, and videos. The unit discusses cyberbullying and the negative social effects of ‘virtual’ friendships. Students practise the present perfect with ‘just’, ‘still’, ‘already’, and ‘yet’.

Unit 3: Remembering and Forgetting / التذكر والنسيان

This unit explores the herb rosemary and its connection to memory improvement. Scientists found that rosemary contains carnosic acid which is neuroprotective – it protects brain cells from damage and may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Even the scent of rosemary was found to improve memory in office workers.

The unit introduces modal verbs of obligation, necessity, and advice (must/mustn’t, have to/don’t have to, should/shouldn’t, need to/needn’t).

Projects include digging wells, teaching, building facilities, conducting wildlife research, and cleaning beaches across countries like Oman, Bahrain, Honduras, Namibia, and Sri Lanka.

يقرأ الطلاب عن مؤسسة Cook International، منظمة خيرية للشباب مقرها المملكة المتحدة، تأسست عام 2004 وتُتيح للشباب (17-23 سنة) المشاركة في مشاريع المساعدة المجتمعية والتحديات المغامرة حول العالم، كحفر الآبار والتدريس وبناء المرافق وإجراء الأبحاث الطبيعية وتنظيف الشواطئ.

3. Grammar: Present Perfect with Just, Still, Already, Yet / المضارع التام مع just وstill وalready وyet

This is the main grammar focus of Theme 3. These four adverbs of time are used with the present perfect to express specific nuances about when something happened.

4. Grammar: Modal Verbs of Obligation, Necessity and Advice / أفعال الوجوب والضرورة والنصيحة

In Unit 4, students practise modal verbs to express different degrees of obligation and advice.
