1. مهمة القواعد (Grammar Task)
(Vocabulary-only Task).
(Quizzes)
(Evaluative) |
| الدرجة الأعلى | موضوع 2 | موضوع 1 | سردية (Narrative) |

Updates to English Language Assessment
Grades 11 and 12
Summary of Changes to the Student Assessment Handbook (SAH)
September 2026
Introduction
In September 2026, the Department of Foreign Language Assessment at the General Directorate of Educational Evaluation issued an important update to the Student Assessment Handbook (SAH) for English in Grades 11 and 12. The revision aligns the handbook with earlier layout and structure changes already applied to SAH Grades 1–4 and 5–10. Its purpose is to unify the framework, reduce document length, and make continuous assessment more consistent with the end-of-semester examination.
This article outlines the main changes under three headings: handbook layout, the Grade 11 and Grade 12 Core end-of-semester examinations, and continuous assessment quizzes in reading and writing, including the accompanying guidance for teachers.
1. Layout and Structure
The handbook has been redesigned to match the newer structure used in the lower-grade handbooks, with a stronger emphasis on brevity, consistency and classroom usability.
- Layout and structure updated in line with SAH Grades 1–4 and 5–10.
- Document size reduced by almost 50%.
- The revised format is more concise, consistent and manageable.
The reduction in length does not remove essential content. It reorganises specifications and criteria so that teachers can prepare papers, mark work and apply moderation with less duplication and easier reference.
2. End-of-Semester Examination — Grade 12 Core
Grammar and vocabulary have been rebalanced. Tasks are now more clearly separated, and grammar carries a higher weighting than before.
Grammar Task
- Increased from 2.5 marks to 5 marks.
The change gives grammatical accuracy a weight equal to vocabulary and reflects its importance at the post-basic stage.
Previous Vocabulary Task
- Deleted. The former task consisted of 5 sentences, each followed by 4 multiple-choice options.
Removing this task avoids overlap with the former integrated item and prevents vocabulary from being tested twice in similar formats.
Former Integrated Grammar/Vocabulary Task
- Changed to a vocabulary-only task.
- Still worth 5 marks.
- Each gap is now followed by three multiple-choice options instead of four.
In practice, grammar is now assessed in a stand-alone 5-mark task and vocabulary in a stand-alone 5-mark task. Reducing the number of options limits random guessing while keeping a familiar multiple-choice format.
3. End-of-Semester Examination — Grade 11 Core
The Grade 11 Core examination now uses the same grammar and vocabulary structure as Grade 12 Core. This creates a consistent pathway across the two grades.
- Grammar: 5 marks in a separate task.
- Vocabulary: 5 marks in a separate task.
Teachers can therefore plan teaching, revision and exam practice along one vertical line rather than managing two different task designs.
4. Continuous Assessment — Quizzes
The number of quizzes required for each language skill is now stated clearly. Quizzes are in-class based. Updated moderation guidelines will be issued in line with the changes. Fractions are rounded up to the next whole number (for example, 2.5 becomes 3). Half marks are not allowed.
Reading Quizzes
- 2–3 quizzes per semester.
- 5 marks for Grades 11–12 Core and Grade 12 Elective.
- 10 marks for Grade 11 Elective.
- The highest quiz score is counted.
- Quizzes should follow the text types, task formats and question types specified for the end-of-semester examination, with the number of items adjusted to the quiz mark (5 or 10 items).
Example: a 5-mark Grade 12 reading quiz may follow Reading One, Reading Two or Reading Three in the final examination, with the number of items reduced to five only.
Teacher note: Diversify reading quizzes. Do not repeat the same task.
Writing Quizzes
- 4 quizzes per semester: 2 quizzes for each writing type.
- Each quiz should follow the final examination specifications and format for the relevant writing type.
- For each writing type, students complete two quizzes on two different topics.
- The higher mark from the two quizzes for each writing type is counted.
- No drafts are required.
Example: Grade 12 — Semester A
| Writing Type | Quiz 1 | Quiz 2 | Score Counted |
| Evaluative | Topic 1 | Topic 2 | Higher mark |
| Narrative | Topic 1 | Topic 2 | Higher mark |
Recommended Policy for Writing Quizzes
The official summary recommends a policy that keeps the quiz a test of independent writing rather than rehearsed memorisation:
- The exact topic should not be announced in advance.
- Students should practise the same writing type before the quiz (for example evaluative, narrative or informative).
- Practice should include a range of possible topics so students learn how to respond to an unfamiliar prompt.
- The quiz should present a new or unseen topic that students have not been given beforehand.
- The writing task should still follow the final examination specifications, format and assessment criteria.
- No drafts are required during the quiz.
If students know the exact topic in advance, the quiz can become a test of memorised or rehearsed writing rather than the ability to produce writing independently.
At the same time, quiz topics should preferably be familiar and thematically related to work students have already practised. That helps them transfer the skills they have learned without simply memorising one title. The final examination, by contrast, continues to use new, unseen topics.
5. Key Changes at a Glance
| Area | What changed |
| Layout and structure | Aligned with SAH Grades 1–4 and 5–10; document size reduced by almost 50%. |
| Grade 12 Core | Grammar increased to 5 marks; previous vocabulary task deleted; integrated task changed to vocabulary only, with three options per gap. |
| Grade 11 Core | Examination structure aligned with Grade 12 Core: Grammar 5 + Vocabulary 5. |
| Continuous assessment | Quiz numbers specified by skill; highest score counted; reading tasks diversified; two writing quizzes per type with no drafts. |
Conclusion
The September 2026 update is mainly an organisational refinement rather than a change in assessment philosophy. Teachers now have a shorter, clearer handbook; a consistent grammar-and-vocabulary design across Grades 11 and 12 Core; and a specified quiz system that mirrors final-examination formats. Updated moderation guidelines will complete the picture for school-level implementation.
