Faisal: Well, last week the teacher gave us an essay to write. The deadline’s today. But I wish I’d started it sooner. I didn’t finish it till 2 am. So I overslept this morning. If only I’d gone to bed earlier. Then I’d have got up in time.
Abdullah: You need to plan your time better. Don’t leave things till the last minute.
Faisal (sighs): Yes, you’re right, but it’s very difficult.
Abdullah: How are you finding university? Are you enjoying it?

عبدالله: عليك أن تخطط لوقتك بشكل أفضل. لا تترك الأمور للحظة الأخيرة.
فيصل (يتنهد): نعم، أنت محق، لكنه أمر صعب جداً.
عبدالله: كيف تجد الجامعة؟ هل تستمتع بها؟

Faisal (worriedly): Yes……..but it’s all a bit strange. I hadn’t realised there would be so many new things to learn apart from studying. Like cooking and washing my clothes.
Abdullah (cheerfully): Don’t worry. It’s normal to find everything strange at first. Before I started university, I’d never lived away from home. I’d never cooked for myself, or done my own ironing. But now I’m a great cook. Look, why don’t you come and have dinner at my place tonight?
Faisal: Cool. Thank you very much.
Abdullah: You’re very welcome and if you need a lift any time, let me know.

⚠️ تحذير مهم: “I’d” قد تكون اختصاراً لـ “I had” (Past Perfect) أو “I would” (Conditional)! يجب التمييز من السياق:
- I’d finished my homework. = I had finished (Past Perfect)
- I’d love to come. = I would love (Conditional/Willingness)

الاستخدام (b): الندم على الماضي (بعد wish و if only)
Regrets about the past after “wish” and “if only”
التركيب: wish/if only + Subject + had + V3
I wish I’d worked harder at school.
أتمنى لو كنت قد اجتهدت أكثر في المدرسة. (لكنني لم أفعل، وأنا نادم)
من الحوار:
“But I wish I’d started it sooner.”
“لكنني أتمنى لو كنت قد بدأته (المقال) في وقت أبكر.”
“If only I’d gone to bed earlier. Then I’d have got up in time.”

💡 ملاحظة: “I’d have got up” هنا هي Third Conditional (نتيجة افتراضية لشرط ماضٍ) — لاحظ كيف ترتبط بـ Past Perfect بشكل طبيعي في التعبير عن الندم.
الاستخدام (c): الكلام المنقول – الجمل الخبرية (Reported Speech – Statements)
My friend said he’d found a new job.
قال صديقي إنه قد وجد عملاً جديداً.
عندما نحوّل جملة من المضارع/الماضي إلى كلام منقول، يتحول الفعل غالباً إلى Past Perfect:

السبب: العيش في قطر حدث قبل قدومه إلى عُمان (حدثان ماضيان، الأقدم منهما يأخذ Past Perfect)
الترجمة: قبل أن يأتي علي إلى عُمان، كان قد عاش في قطر لفترة طويلة.
2. Oh no, it’s raining! If only I remembered/had remembered my umbrella.
✅ الإجابة: had remembered
السبب: “if only” + Past Perfect للتعبير عن الندم على شيء لم يحدث في الماضي
الترجمة: يا للهول، إنها تمطر! لو كنت قد تذكرت مظلتي (لكني لم أفعل).
3. I had my dinner and then I did/had done my homework.
✅ الإجابة: did
السبب: الأحداث هنا متتابعة بترتيب طبيعي (تناولت العشاء، ثم قمت بالواجب) — كلاهما Past Simple، لا حاجة لـ Past Perfect لأن “then” يوضح التتابع الزمني بنفسه.
الترجمة: تناولت عشائي ثم قمت بواجبي.
4. Before Fatma went to China, she had never seen/never saw a panda.

السبب: عدم رؤية الباندا حدث قبل السفر للصين (حدثان، الأقدم Past Perfect)
